Electromagnetic Therapy as a Complementary Approach in Trauma Care: A Successful Case

Thursday, January 16, 2025

Trauma management in Veterinary Medicine often requires integrated solutions, especially in critical cases.

This article by the Kasetsart University Veterinary Teaching Hospital in Bangkok, Thailand, describes the use of Magnetotherapy Qs Vet as a complementary rehabilitation therapy in the care of multiple traumas following a road traffic accident. The patient, a 5-month-old Golden Retriever, was admitted with quadriplegia, and in a comatose state, assessed with a score of 3 in the Modified Glasgow Coma Scale (MGCS), indicative of severe neurological dysfunction.
Radiographs and CT scan revealed:

  • multiple skull fractures
  • cerebral oedema
  • midbrain haemorrhage
  • left humeral fracture

Given the severity of the case, surgery was considered too risky, therefore, only the conservative approach was taken into consideration.

Application of Qs Vet Electromagnetic therapy: the effects

To traditional treatments, which included: painkillers, anticonvulsants, antibiotics and blood transfusions, pulsed electromagnetic field (PEMF) therapy was added from the fourth day.
Treatment was administered twice a day with the aim of:

  • reducing pain
  • controlling inflammation
  • promoting the healing process of the fractures.

Already after three days from starting the PEMF therapy, doctors noticed a significant neurological improvement, evidenced by the increase in the MGCS score and by the ability to feed independently.
Upon discharge, one month after hospitalisation, the patient showed a clear clinical and neurological improvement: the MGCS score had risen to 14, the fractures were consolidated and the patient began to walk again.

Electromagnetic therapy and Trauma: the prospects

PEMF therapy has proved to be an effective and safe complementary treatment for multi-organ trauma and severe brain injuries, offering an innovative approach for critical patients.

Thanks to its safety and ability to respect the delicate physiological balance, it represents a promising therapeutic prospect in human and veterinary medicine to be further explored.
