Otto, Maremma Sheepdog affected by perianal fistulas, and Stella, cat with buccal lesions, could resume their best physical condition after being treated with a complete cycle of MLS® Laser Therapy. The therapy total effectiveness is not only due to the choice of the right protocol, but also to the proper use of the devices for the MLS® application.
Dr. Mila Speciani, Product Specialist ASAveterinary, delves into details.
D. Buccal lesions are among the diseases in which the application of MLS® Laser Therapy can be critical. Which protocol has been used for their treatment?
R. We focused on a new treatment protocol for stomatitis, which is undergoing a research study lead by dr. Paolo Squarzoni (Vet Dentistry Opinion Leader) in synergy with ASAcampus, aiming at demonstrating, as well through histology, the effectiveness of MLS® applications. Stella’s case is an encouraging example of the protocol efficacy in reduction and control of symptoms.
D. Was the used protocol effective in providing actual clinical benefits?
R. The most noticeable and important benefit is the possibility offered by this protocol to treat stomatitis, gingivitis and buccal lesions with a closed mouth. The handpiece is applied on 3 outer points and, thanks to the penetration depth in the soft tissues, the treatment of buccal mucosa is complete. Everything not needing sedation and without asking the animal to open the mouth, which is often very painful when this kind of symptoms show up.
D. Even perianal fistulas could find in MLS® a viable solution. What is the best approach for their treatment?
R. The programs "contaminated wound healing" and "wound healing" already set on Mphi Vet
have proven their value, thanks to an unique plus of the patent MLS®: this therapy makes possible to treat individual points in total safety and comfort for the animal, ideal option when dealing with the external opening of perianal glands fistulas, where the lesion to treat is localized and point-like. Moreover, when using this specific point to point application modality, treatment time is reduced to a few seconds per point, an amazing plus when in need of frequent and repeated applications on sensitive areas such as the perianal one.
